Marco A. López Jr., Director
Arizona Department of Commerce

Marco A. López, Jr. comes to the Arizona Department of Commerce from the Office of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, where he has served in various capacities over the past five years. His most recent responsibilities include Senior Adviser to the Governor, Vice-Chair of the Arizona-Mexico Commission and Policy Adviser for Mexico and Latin America. Additionally, López served as the Executive Director for the Commission before ascending to the policy position. During his time at the Governor’s Office, López has played a vital role in trade missions to Mexico and Canada, and has established diplomatic relationships with consulates of other foreign nations.

López is accomplished thus far in his public sector career: at the age of 22, he became one of the youngest mayors in the nation, elected into office in his hometown of Nogales, Arizona shortly after graduating from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He was reelected by an overwhelming majority of the vote in 2002, one year before being tapped to take a job at the State Capitol.

López’s service to Southern Arizona and the community began as a teenager, when he took a position as a congressional page in Washington, D.C. for Rep. Ed Pastor. Over the years, López has taken on volunteer and community service roles, becoming a founding member of the Arizona Border Mayors Association, an honorary member of Lions Club International, a board member for the Border Trade Alliance and a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
